STMicroelectronics recently organized an event on sustainability.
Edoardo Auteri, Head of Sustainability Programs, Sales & Marketing, AP Region, excluding China, STMicroelectronics, stated that the J4CE, or Japan for Circular Economy has already been established.
We need to design and manufacture semiconductor products. STMicroelectronics creates technology in a sustainable way. The company is also committed to be carbon neutral by 2027, initially taken in 2020. In 2019, STMicroelectronics also achieved the 2025 CO2 goal.
We have the eco-design program for semiconductors. In 2011, we started sustainable technology program. We released the 27th Sustainability report. STMicroelectronics is recognized as a top 100 global innovator by Clarivate. STMicroelectronics is also among the top 100 world's most sustainable companies. STMicroelectronics is a unique semiconductor design and manufacturer ranked worldwide.
In terms of environmental rankings, STMicroelectronics holds an A- rating for climate and water in CDP, is recognized as a platinum member by Ecovadis, and is a full member of RBA. The company has been ranked at 79/100 in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index.
Carbon neutrality by 2027
STMicroelectronics is scheduled to reach carbon neutrality by 2027. The magnitude of emission will be low enough by that time. We are fully done GHG Scope 1 and 2, and GHG Scope 3 has been reached partially.
STMicroelectronics will be sourcing 100% renewable energy by 2027. There will be 50% reduction of direct (scope 1), and indirect (scope 2), emissions in 2025, compared to 2018. We will have 80% renewable electricity sourcing by 2025. Compliance with SBTi for 1.5 degree C scenario by 2025. is also on track. As STMicroelectronics, we are trying to contribute to the goal.
We can reach our targets by reducing our direct emissions as far as possible. We are investing in energy saving programs. We are innovating for renewable energy supply. We are minimizing indirect emissions from transportation. We are also compensating the remaining emissions.
STMicroelectronics also has responsible features, such as human welfare application, power efficient, low carbon, planet-friendly application, manufacturing commitment >=7 years, and lead / halogen / antimony free, and RoHS-compliant without exception. Last year, we recycled about 95% of e-waste. In fact, any product from STMicroelectronics has two or more such features.
Sustainable technology
There are some opportunities for India. These are in growing electricity demand, renewable capacity growth, and electric vehicle proliferation. Sustainable technology can help across all of these areas. EV penetration has also slowed down a bit. India faces the challenge to meet the 2030 goal.
STMicroelectronics has been enabling green or well-being solutions. We are contributing to reducing application consumption. We have product carbon footprint methodology. This includes front-end sites per mm2/mask, and backend sites per PIN.
We are also providing the expertise and tools to customers for design for sustainability. We have the open eDesignSuite for customers. The comparison of emission is different from country to country. India should move to more cleaner electricity mix in the future. We have also reduced metals consumption by 41%, and water consumption by 90%. We have further reduced electricity consumption by 70%.
We are contributing to reducing application consumption. For eg., the compressor used in the refrigerator (home appliance and industrial application). India's CO2 emission coefficient of electricity is equal to 0.82 kg CO2/kWh, as per IEA.
Wideband gap (WBG) materials also deliver greater efficiency for AI and data server PSUs. Eg., WBG is 90% is in the distribution transformer, as against 84% for silicon. STM32U3 is STM's latest ultra-low power MCU using the innovative near-threshold design to significantly reduce dynamic power consumption.
There can be more energy-efficient and smaller devices. We can have 7x longer battery life for activity tracking devices, 4x smaller device size for gas and water metering devices, and 2x more power efficiency for industrial GPS tracking devices using STM's solution.
STMicroelectronics' latest ultra-low power MCU delivers superior efficiency against industry references. STM32U3 outperforms best-in-class industry products. It is the most power efficient product in all app areas.
STMicroelectronics uses sustainable packaging. contributing to collective effort to reduce the environmental impact. We have enhanced user experience, eco-friendly packaging, and versatile design. All these changes combined will reduce annual plastic consumption for STM32 boards by around 15 tons per year.
STMicroelectronics is committed to carbon neutrality. We have an ambitious roadmap, and used 71% of renewable energy in 2023. We are moving towards carbon-neutral design.
