Founded in 1969, RIR Power Electronics, formerly Ruttonsha International Rectifier Ltd, has relaunched its brand identity and vision, marking a bold new chapter in its legacy.
After more than five decades as one of India’s most trusted names in power electronics, the company now steps into the future as one of India’s first vertically integrated Silicon Carbide (SiC) semiconductor manufacturers, and stepping out with a renewed purpose and a fresh promise: “Powering Progress—Enabling Tomorrow.”
RIR’s state-of-the-art facility will be part of a SiC power campus in Bhubaneswar. With a total project investment of ₹618 crore, it represents a defining milestone in India’s semiconductor journey.
Backed with significant support by the Government of Odisha, this landmark project stands as a testament to the synergy of visionary leadership and strong policy support, laying the foundation for India’s SiC semiconductor ecosystem from the ground up.
SiC advantage
SiC semiconductors are the building blocks of our high-power future. These next-generation chips deliver breakthrough capabilities that conventional silicon technology simply cannot match:
- Higher efficiency and reduced energy losses.
- Faster charging for electric vehicles.
- Greater reliability under extreme temperatures and workloads.
- Enhanced performance for renewable energy, defense, aerospace, medical, and industrial applications.
Facility built for global leadership
RIR’s Bhubaneswar plant will manufacture high-power SiC MOSFETs, IGBTs, and diodes ranging from 3.3 kV to 20 kV. The facility is expected to generate more than 500 skilled jobs across R&D, engineering, and operations. SiC wafer epitaxy production is set to commence by March 2026, with phased commercial rollouts thereafter.
“Our transformation is not just about capacity building, it’s about capability building. With silicon carbide, we are creating the backbone for technologies that will define the next 50 years,” said Dr. Harshad Mehta, Chairman, RIR Power Electronics.
“India’s semiconductor story isn’t a sprint. It’s a generational relay and we’ve been running our legs for over five decades.” added Perry Schugart, CMO, RIR Power Electronics. “We are committed to delivering solutions that not only meet today’s demands, but also anticipate the challenges of tomorrow.”
