A new sports facility will soon open on the site of the former Ferry Dusika Indoor Stadium. It will be groundbreaking in both energy and environmental terms. The central component of the energy supply will be over 1,130 photovoltaic-thermal hybrid (PVT) modules supplied by the Saxon manufacturer, Sunmaxx.

The installation and planning of the system were carried out in cooperation with Sunmaxx's partner companies Wagner Solar GmbH and Fortuna Solar eG .

The integrated energy concept for the new Vienna Sports Arena is based on the highest sustainability standards and combines PVT with geothermal energy and brine heat pumps. This will ensure that the building will be supplied with electricity and heat efficiently, climate-neutrally, and cost-effectively once it is operational. The system was planned by FIN – Future is Now Kuster Energielösungen GmbH .

Sunmaxx's PVT hybrid technology combines photovoltaics and solar thermal energy in a highly efficient system. It enables a largely self-sufficient, climate-neutral, and cost-effective electricity and heat supply for a wide range of applications – from private homes to industrial plants with process heat to municipal district heating.

With the heat exchanger technology specially developed by Sunmaxx, the PVT modules produce electricity and heat simultaneously with the highest possible performance and yield – using both solar radiation and the ambient air as energy sources.

The successful implementation of the project makes it clear that PVT has finally arrived in large-scale use. The Vienna Sports Arena impressively demonstrates how the complete decarbonization of buildings can be achieved with PVT and geothermal energy – a significant step not only for the City of Vienna, but for the entire European energy transition.
