Is there a legacy to IBMs Project Green?
Energy conservation has been an integral part of IBMs environmental
management system since 1974. Between 1990 and 2005, IBM reduced CO2 emissions
through energy conservation by an amount equal to 40% of the 1990 amount. Also,
in 2006, IBM purchased 96,000 MWh of renewable energy certificates (RECs), and
generated 13,704 MWh of electricity by wind turbines, solar panels, and biomass.
IBM has also won a US DOE and EPA 2006 Green Power Purchasing Award.
What is your strategy around Green IT?
As part of Project Big Green, we have created a global green team of over
1,000 energy efficiency specialists from across the company, to offer green
solutions comprising IBMs hardware, software, services, research, and finance
offerings. The mission is to anticipate critical environmental problems, develop
breakthrough technologies and services, and deliver relevant solutions through
collaborative innovation with clients and business partners.
How and where does India specifically fit in this new Green atlas for IBM?
Green IT awareness is growing rapidly among large and small companies,

managers are increasingly moving toward energy-efficient technologies.
IBM has announced spends of about $1 bn for more efficient computing centers?
We will direct $1 bn a year, globally, spread across R&D, products,
software, services, etc, to increase the level of energy efficiency in IT. IBM
will continue to drive leadership in power efficiency with its Cool Blue
portfolio of innovation. Cool Blue spans the spectrum, from materials,
devices, circuits, chips, system architecture, and software, and can be utilized
to help solve data center energy problems.
