As the Internet becomes omni present, e learning has started to gain
momentum. So HR managers need to take a relook at knowledge management and
training.
Learning that depends on Internet or any other form of electronic
communication is probably the simplest definition of e learning. Its scope is
very wide and equally far-reaching are its consequences. It can range from
training through net to a corporate knowledge portal. In today’s Internet age,
e learning can be made interactive using message boards.
Most people feel that e learning is sitting in front of the computer and
learning about subject(s) of your choice. However, in reality, organizations can
harness the power of e learning by supplementing what one has learnt, through
this method, with group discussions amongst employees who are pursuing the same
course through the net.

In today’s world, business cycles are getting shorter, there are huge time
pressures, and decisions need to be taken on the spot. From blue collar to
white-collar employees, everyone needs on the spot knowledge to execute their
jobs better.
Quite a few companies are expanding to new countries and territories and
therefore, they need to be quick on their feet and gain market knowledge faster
and faster. The world of business is seeing a large number of mergers and a
larger number of acquisitions. A new entity needs to think on its feet as
rapidly as possible, delearn some old practices and learn new things to make it
successful. With this kind of a scenario, it is important that HR managers look
at e learning as a good viable alternative.
An Intranet is a company’s internal communications culture and knowledge
network. A well-managed Intranet helps employees to come close to each other via
the net even though distances maybe large. Organizations that can equip the
Intranet, with information for employees in a logical and simple way, are the
ones that will have a competitive advantage in today’s world.
In the fast growing world of Internet, it is important for HR Managers to
realize the power of e learning and Intranets. Companies, which use these
sooner, will be the ones who will harness the power of knowledge in their
organizations and will continue to have competitive advantage.
