Expand North Star Unveils Technological Marvels

Expand North Star, the world's largest startup showcase, opened at the new Dubai Harbour venue, drawing 1800 startups from over 100 countries and over 1,000 investors managing an astounding US$ 1 trillion.

Among the highlights was the live demonstration of ARTEMIS, the world's fastest-walking humanoid robot, developed by UCLA researchers. This versatile robot, weighing 85 pounds and standing at 4 feet, 8 inches, boasts custom-designed actuators that mimic biological muscles. ARTEMIS can navigate any terrain, even rough and unstable surfaces, at an impressive speed of 2.1 m/s.

Gary Blowers, CEO of UAE-based LVL Well-being, shared his entrepreneurial journey, underscoring the marathon-like nature of fundraising.

"Raising capital is a marathon, not a sprint," advised Blowers. "But don't get too caught up with raising capital that you forget to grow the business; keep one eye on the commercials."

He also highlighted the importance of open communication and prioritizing well-being to combat potential negative impacts on mental health during the entrepreneurial journey.

GITEX GLOBAL 2023 Redefines Future Mobility

At GITEX GLOBAL 2023, the profound impact of driverless mobility on society takes center stage as driverless car trials continue worldwide, including in the UAE. Pony.ai, a Toyota-backed robotaxi unicorn valued at $8.5 billion, leads the charge in designing autonomous vehicles with active deployments in key tech hubs like Silicon Valley, Beijing, and Guangzhou.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Leo Wang, co-founder and CFO of Pony.ai, expressed confidence in the Middle East's potential for expansion, citing the region's favorable business environment and eagerness to adopt advanced AI technology. He remarked, "GITEX GLOBAL represents the vast breadth of technology available for robocar brands to help forge broad industrial ecosystems."

In light of increasing competition in the autonomous driving sector, Dr. Wang welcomed the rivalry, emphasizing the need for a diverse field to collectively advance the technology. He stated, "Competition is always welcome because the technology and the market potential are progressing much faster. So, you don't want to be the only player in the field; you want a diverse field so we can all progress together."

CTOs Navigate the Generative AI Era

Generative AI is fundamentally transforming the role of Chief Technology Officers (CTOs), demanding a fresh perspective and skill set for leading and managing software development teams. CTOs now face pressure to embrace generative AI as a strategic asset and a competitive edge. This involves fostering innovation and collaboration among developers while addressing potential challenges like data privacy breaches and ethical considerations related to AI.

During the second day of GITEX GLOBAL, His Excellency Omar Sultan Al Olama, UAE Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications, graced the inaugural GITEX CTO World Congress. He praised the gathering as a platform that unites the brightest minds in technology, fostering cross-pollination among startups, individuals, and scientists worldwide to shape the future of technology.

Smart Cities: Pioneering Sustainability

Over 50% of smart cities have embraced the integration of AI with 5G technology, revolutionizing communication for connected devices. However, this vision faces multifaceted challenges, including lurking cybersecurity risks, escalating concerns over data privacy, and interoperability hurdles.

In a high-level discussion on the future of smart cities, experts including Chris Wan from Masdar City, Jordi Vaquer from the World Association of Major Metropolises, Dr. Nasser Saidi from Clean Energy Business Council MENA, and Thomas Debass from the US Department of State, explored the imperative of achieving net-zero goals expeditiously. They emphasized factors like population growth and delved into the monumental task of investing in sustainable urban development. Proposed solutions encompassed phasing out fossil fuel subsidies, implementing a carbon tax, and attracting private sector funding for energy transition projects.
