New Update

This is an unbelievable story. A story of an eccentric geek. John McAfee (founder of McAfee) was in the news for the all the wrong reasons in the past and now comes the worst- he is a murder suspect on the run. John McAfee is a flamboyant man, no doubt - in real life his fetish for arms and ammunition, adventure sports, drugs and exotic islands is well known. And now the iconic anti-virus programmer and yoga guru who founded McAfee in 1987 is wanted for murder of his neighbor Gregory Faull by the Belizean authorities.

According to the first reports in Gizmodo.com and Wired and then went viral across all media- McAfee who lives in a huge beach side villa in Orange Walk town in Belize and his neighbor is Gregory Faull another multi-millionaire with varied business interests. Faull's maid found him with a gunshot wound on his head when she came to work on Sunday.

McAfee Associates founded by John McAfee in 1987 went on to become the world's largest anti-virus company in two decades of its existence. But John

McAfee sold his company in the late 1990s, and made a huge fortune of $ 100 million but lost most of it in the financial crisis of 2007, and reports say that he sold of all of his prime assets in the United States and moved to the exotic island of Belize in Central America by 2008. Belize is bordered to the north by Mexico, south and west by Guatemala, and to the east by the Caribbean Sea. It may be recalled, Intel acquired McAfee in 2010 for a whopping $ 7.6 bn.

Going by a latest CBS news report, which interviewed Jeff Wise, a reporter with Gizmodo.com, who had met John McAfee numerous instances in the past for unravelling his alleged criminal connections in the past said, "When I first got to know about him, he was just larger than life, very charismatic character and in a sense, being able to do whatever you want can be a curse at time"

While Belize police hunt out McAfee, he in turn had contacted Joshua Davis, contributing editor with Wired Magazine. In a phone conversation McAfee said Davis that he is innocent and being framed by the officials. Davis had also started a Twitter feed updating his conversations with McAfee, who is in touch with him from an undisclosed location in Belize. As I write this, going through some of Davis' Tweets, the latest updates about McAfee's whereabouts read : " Either way, McAfee says he has no intention of turning himself in for questioning as he believes he will not survive police custody" and McAfee called: Says police spokesperson did not say he is a suspect. The spokesperson has only said that he is wanted for questioning.

Many observers at this point in time point John McAfee's dubious lifestyle might have caused him to dig his own grave. His record is not straight. For instance in the month of May 2012, John McAfee's property in Orange Walk Town, Belize, was raided by the Gang Suppression Unit (GSU). A GSU press release stated that he was arrested for unlicensed drug manufacturing and possession of an unlicensed weapon. McAfee was allegedly in the presence of his 17-year-old Belizean girlfriend. McAfee later let out, denies all this a Belizean government settling scores with him.

Clearly at this point in time it's unclear whether McAfee committed this crime. We need to reiterate that he is just a suspect and needed for questioning. But what puzzles many is why he is evading the law and on the run? As of now going by his communication with Davis he is still on the run and at large and has altered his appearance and many say he might have fled to Mexico which is nearby. Also whether it will kick up a diplomatic row between US and Belize is to be seen as Belize largely depends on US tourists for its economy. At the end of the day, it's really tragic such an intelligent man who pioneered the anti-virus industry as we know today has been reduced to this state of affairs.
