Flat Growth for India Client PC
Market
The overall India Client PC
market shipments remained flat at 8 mn during January-December 2008 against
8.1 mn in 2007. For CY 2008, desktop PC shipments dropped 10.1% while
notebook PC shipments recorded a growth of 31.5% on a y-o-y basis.

During the October-December 2008 quarter (Q4
2008) the overall India Client PC shipments were 1.6 mn units, a drop of
22.7% over the same period previous year. The desktop PC shipments dropped
24.7% while notebook PC shipments recorded a 17.4% degrowth (Q4 2008 over Q4
2007).

During the fourth quarter, Hewlett-Packard
retained the top spot in the overall India Client PC (notebooks and desktops
combined) market with a market share* of 15.6% by unit shipments. Dell
dislodged HCL from the second spot with a 10.9% share while HCL was third
with 9.6% of total PC shipments.

In terms of desktop PC shipments during Q4
2008, HP and HCL were tied at first position with a market share of 10.6%
each, while Dell ranked third. In terms of notebook PC shipments during Q4
2008, HP retained the top spot with a reduced market share of 27.6% followed
by Dell at the second spot while Acer came in third.

The Home and SMB segments recorded the
lowest drop (in percentage terms) in CY 2008 vis--vis CY 2007. The measures
announced by the RBI to free up credit are expected to revive demand from
these segments and a moderate recovery in shipments may result during the
second half of CY 2009, said Sumanta Mukherjee, lead analyst, computing
products research, IDC India.

Despite these measures, CY 2009 could still
see a drop in the overall India client PC shipments. Judicious inventory
management coupled with marketing initiatives to explore the hitherto
untapped long tail of customers in the Indian heartland could be the key
to survival in a tough year, said Kapil Dev Singh, country manager, IDC
India.

Facebook Users Urged to Track
Down Rapist
In a rare
case of using a social networking site to track down a criminal, the
boyfriend of a rape victim in Britain has set up a Facebook page in an
effort to catch her attacker.

The
group, titled Find the Sale rapist, has the CCTV images of the suspect, a
man in his 40s or 50s, and details of the attack that happened in Manchester
last August.

This man needs to be caught ASAP. He is a
danger to the public. After a frantic search I found her in the state this
beast left her in. I ask everyone to help bring this sick pervert to
justice, the boyfriend urged the Facebook users.

The group has more than 5,500 members with
more joining everyday. The woman was raped as she stepped out of a local pub
after a late night party, to walk home to her parents.

The boyfriend of the victim, a former
restaurant manager in his 20s, whose identity was not revealed due to legal
issues, said he decided to turn to the social networking site after a
public appeal for information from the police proved unsuccessful.

Meanwhile, detectives have warned that the
Facebook page could affect a prosecution if the case reaches court. Police
officials have reportedly contacted the man behind the page to advise him on
the legal risks, said reports. However, the cops were hopeful that the use
of four grainy images on the Facebook page will generate information
leading to an arrest.
