India’s first microprocessor-based computers;
Indian Language computers; Railways signaling equipment; And the world’s first i486
system–Cosmos/10–all these breakthroughs were notched up by DCM Data Products, the IT division of the DCM Group. Added to this, the company also bagged an $11 million export order from a US-based company in 1990.
Despite many firsts to its name, the oldest computer company of India, dating back to 1972, has belied its potential. The company’s problems stemmed, to some extent, from its inability to gear itself to the changing demands of a fiercely competitive market in which margins have progressively shrunk. With additions to its product range noticeably out of tune, the company slowly lost out on its cutting edge.
In 1992, the company was spun out of the DCM Group and floated off as a separate company called DCM Data Systems. Today the company offers systems integration, software development and hardware design services to its clients with a focus on banking, finance and manufacturing.
It has provided software development services to several international companies including Intel, Microsoft, Northrop, Control Data, Thomson-Sinatra and Sequent. The company also provides services in Application Specific Integrated Circuit design. Its tie-ups include LSI Logic and European Silicon Structures. The technical services division designs computer systems for companies like IBM and Control Data.
