215 mn: Broadband subscribers throughout the world in

2005, according to the Computer Industry Almanac. That's up from less than 5 mn

in 1999 and 67 mn in 2002. Worldwide Internet users are forecasted to reach

nearly 1.8 bn in 2010.

71 mn: US households will have broadband by 2010, as per

Forrester Research. Also, 53% will own a laptop, and 37% will use a digital

video recorder (DVR) to gain control over how and when they watch TV. 29% of

North American households connected to the Internet were using broadband

connections in 2004, up from 19% in 2003.

47.5 mn: Broadband users in the European Union, according

to Point Topic, of which 81% use DSL. UK added more than 1,543,000 DSL

subscribers in the first half of 2005, bringing the total figure to 5,691,000, a

growth of more than 37%, the fastest rate in Europe and among the fastest in the

world.

9.3 mn: Number of new Broadband subscribers in 2005. This

is down from 9.5 mn in 2004. That figure is seen dropping off to 8.1 mn new net

users in 2006 with continued decrease thereafter, according to Kagan.

1.3 bn: The worldwide broadband modem, router, and

gateway market grew 3% to $1.3 bn and unit shipments grew 5% to 26.7 mn between

Q1 2005 and Q2 2005, according to Infonetics Research.

75.8%: Cable-modem services were on average, 75.8% more

expensive than DSL in August 2005, up from a 53.3% gap in July 2005. SG Cowen

estimates that cable companies will capture about 47.3% of net new broadband

subscribers in 2005.

60%: of small businesses in the US cannot get broadband

(access to cable or DSL), according to a survey by Hughes Network systems.

Another 44% of suburban small businesses don't have so-called terrestrial

broadband services available.
