OpenAI is expanding its budget-friendly AI services, ChatGPT Go plan in Indonesia. The plan is priced at Rp 75,000 (approx USD 4.50) per month.

OpenAI's first introductory price for the AI service in India was at Rs. 399 per month (approx USD 4.5), and as the country is already a major market for ChatGPT, with millions of users, the number of paid subscribers doubled in India. The key to the India launch was not just the lower price point, but also the integration of local payment methods. OpenAI enabled support for the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), a widely used digital payment system in India.

This move made the subscription accessible to a much larger user base that may not have a credit card, a significant barrier for many international subscription services. The plan itself offers users 10 times more usage limits for prompts, image generation, and file uploads compared to the free version. It also includes a twice-longer memory for more personalised responses over time, positioning it as an ideal mid-tier option for students, freelancers, and small businesses who need more power than the free version but do not require the full suite of premium features.

Race for affordability

With a successful deployment in the Indian market, OpenAI is looking towards other emerging markets. This move places OpenAI into direct competition with Google, which recently launched its own AI Plus subscription plan in Indonesia at a similar price.

Google’s plan provides access to its Gemini 2.5 Pro chatbot and creative tools such as Flow, Whisk and Veo 3 Fast. It also includes enhanced features for its AI research assistant, NotebookLM, and integrates AI capabilities into Gmail, Docs, and Sheets, along with 200GB of Cloud storage.

The introduction of these budget-friendly, low-cost plans signifies the strategy being adopted by big AI companies. It seems they are now moving beyond high-priced premium offerings and targeting emerging markets with a focus on affordability and wider adoption.
