How cryptocurrency is used to incentivize research for dementia

Neonious Biotech is using cryptocurrency economics to incentivize a large group of people to run molecular dynamic simulations on their computers and will use this research power to independently audit the efficiency and side effects of existing dementia medication, with the goal of identifying which medication should be taken by who for best effects and ideally even triggering the development of optimized drugs.

Worldwide, there are over 50 million people living with various forms of dementia, among which most known are Alzheimer's disease. In countries with a high life expectancy the situation is even worse, and the situation is expected to worsen even more in the next 20 years.

To defeat these diseases all around the globe organizations and research groups are conducting research. Most of this research centers around field studies. However, this field study process usually takes a long time and are typically not successful. Almost all field studies targeting dementia of the past dozen years failed.

With today’s computing power, molecular dynamic simulations are a good tool to simulate how drugs interact in humans on the computer, giving insights more rapidly. By taking the most important drugs for moderate to severe dementia conditions as a starting point, Neonious Biotech can:

• Run MD simulations with potential ligands to the active ingredients of the drugs to identify the reasons why some of the drugs work and some do not with specific people.
• Run MD simulations with all other drug’s active ingredients, ligands, and receptors which the active ingredients are known to interact with to potential find ways to reduce the side effects of the drugs.
• Run many MD simulations with slightly varied molecules to potentially find more effective drugs.

Thousands of simulations have to be performed to achieve recognizable results. As each simulation can take days to weeks of processing on a computer, till now these simulations required super computers, which only the largest research organizations have available.

The most important drugs used with moderate to severe dementia untampered on the network and therefore can often replace written contracts. This is the basis on which a large proportion of other cryptocurrencies (known as tokens) are implemented. As another example, the Filecoin makes many people provide a total of 100,000 GB storage.
