New Update

Hype cycle...Cloud computing is still a visible and hyped term, but, at this point, it has clearly passed the Peak of Inflated Expectations on Gartner' Hype Cycle for Cloud Computing. There are signs of fatigue, rampant cloudwashing and signs of disillusionment (e.g., highly visible failures). Although cloud computing is approaching the Trough of Disillusionment, it remains a major force in IT. Users are changing their buying behaviors, and, although it's unlikely they'll completely abandon on-premises models or soon buy complex, mission-critical processes as services through the cloud, there is a movement toward consuming services in a more cost-effective way and to enable capabilities not easily done elsewhere.

While the hype has peaked, there is still a lot of hype around cloud
computing. Every IT vendor has a cloud strategy, although many aren't
cloud-centric. Variations, such as private cloudcomputing and hybrid
approaches, compound the hype and demonstrate that one entry on a Hype Cycle cannot adequately represent all that is cloud computing.

Meaning...Cloud computing means different things to different organizations and some aspects of provider solutions (like IAAS) are not as mature and enterprise ready as others (for e.g. some SaaS applications).

Cloud computing is not a skill set in itself, it is not creating a new niche
area for jobs but expertise in cloud based architectures is almost a mandate for job descriptions like CIO, Datacenter Administrators, Application Developers, Data Architects, BI/DW Analysts.

Small start ups and specialist service providers are using hosted big data
solutions to enable increased competitiveness and faster time to market of
their products in addition to cost savings. All major SI's and IT
outsourcers now have big data products and technologists to offer their
clients.

The future is likely to see an increased understanding of cloud solutions among most enterprises, but the most significant increase in adoption will be from the mid market segment, as service providers begin offering segment specific solutions that can resolve practical use cases.
