Big data analytics is emerging as a bigger opportunity for India. India and China contribute about 17% of the digital universe and by 2020, it is expected to grow to 29%. In figurative terms, if we were to stack up data generated in India last year with 32 gb iPhone 5s, it would be as tall as Mt Everest, states a new EMC sponsored Digital universe study.
The study further reveals that data creation is doubling every year. However, the negatives are that only half the data is being analysed, and data protection is not keeping pace with this growth. More data also means advanced and a higher number of security threats. Janey pointed out that there are four aspects CIOs are focusing on - security, cloud, analysis (big data) and mobile, abbreviated as SCAM.
What it means for the industry
This directly translates into an opportunity - India can be the hub for big data solutions. "It's been predicted that there will be a shortage of 190,000 data scientists globally by 2019 and this is an are we can build on," commented Rajesh Janey, President - India and SAARC at EMC.
