India is all set to join the eminent group of nations that managed to successfully land on the lunar surface. The world is waiting to witness India's Chandrayaan 3 to create history with a soft landing the Vikram Lander along with the Pragyaan rover on the south pole of the moon's surface.
Today Chandrayaan 3 the third Lunar Mission of ISRO will enter into the last crucial 20 minutes when the Vikram Lander will attempt a soft landing breaking the last barrier between India's success in the journey of space exploration.
The Journey of Chandrayan 3
Chandrayaan 3 the third successive lunar mission by ISRO started its journey on 14th July from Satish Dhawan Space Center. On 5th August the satellite entered the moon's orbit.
Later on 17th August the propulsion module and the Vikram Landers separated from each other along with the Pragyaan rover. And, Vikram Lander will soon be brought close to the lunar surface.
If we look back in time Chandrayaan 2 was also able to complete its journey until this point before it crashed. The second lunar mission lost its control in between these critical 20 minutes only.
Why are these 20 minutes crucial for Chandrayaan 3?
As the Vikram Lander receives commands from the space center it will start to descend towards the lunar surface from an altitude of 25km with a velocity of 1.68 km per second.
Then the lander will enter into the 'rough braking phase' where it will slow down with all its engines firing, horizontally to the lunar surface. This rough braking phase will last for almost 11 minutes.
As it successfully crosses the phase Vikram Lander will be made vertical to the surface of the moon initiating the 'fine braking phase'. It will be hovering above the lunar surface at 800 meters. Later as the lander further proceeds down it will stop hovering at 150 meters, take images for hazard detection, and search for the landing site.
Vikram Lander will land on the lunar surface with just two of its engines firing. Once the sensors installed in the legs of Vikram Lander touch the surface, the engines will automatically shut down putting an end to the journey and marking one of India's Major achievements.
