A fall from grace–from the pecking order of the DQ Top 20– is what
happened to Celetron this year. The company’s revenues plunged from Rs 1,033
crore to nearly one-third–Rs 344 crore. The slowdown in the US economy had led
to excess inventories, and the company had to slam the brakes–manufacturing
capacities were not utilized. This had an impact on demand. In a bid to swim out
of troubled waters, Celetron redefined its offerings, and launched 15 new
product categories–fibre optic products, audio amplifiers, satellite receiver
boards and set-top boxes, and radio frequency-based contactless cards. These
typically have a long lead-time in terms of global qualification cycles and
vendor approvals. The company is hopeful that the new products will drive up
revenues again.
