As the Coronavirus pandemic has bought the economy to a standstill, reports on top firms withdrawing job offers have begun to erupt. With students from top institutes such as IITs, IIMs, and other technical institutes being impacted due to this issue, fear about graduates being unemployed is on the rise. However, Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, Union Cabinet Minister for Human Resource Development, Government of India, has taken the matter into cognizance and requested firms to not withdraw job offers.

“I have appealed to all campus recruiters not to withdraw jobs offered to graduating students of technical education institutions,” tweeted Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal. The minister goes on to add that the students who the job offers were made to during the placement drive were among the “country’s brightest minds” and could, in fact, help recruiters in times of crisis.

“I have also asked all IIT directors to hold special placement drive for the students affected by cancelled job offers,” added the minister while reminding the citizens of the country that everyone had to unite and battle the fight against Coronavirus in order to triumph in these unpredictable times.

As the 21-days lockdown has been put in place to contain the Coronavirus, the economy has been hit due to various reasons. This has led to companies announcing pay cuts and reports of employees being laid off have also come to light despite the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India, asking both private and public organizations to not terminate jobs on the pretext of the prevailing conditions.

The Government of India too has taken a similar measure of reducing allowances and pension of all MPs by 30 percent for a year. Furthermore, MPLADS funds of all MPs for the next 2 years will be used to battle the Coronavirus pandemic.
