It perhaps started with data services that not many were happy with.
Then it graduated to
href="http://dqindia.ciol.com/content/wifi/2009/109020604.asp">3G
that didn't deliver on expected lines. Getting Deepika Padukone to
endorse itself was also a step in this journey, whose final stone
perhaps has been unturned by the recent foray into conferencing
services.
The journey is telecom giant BSNL's journey of transformation. Call it
the intense market dynamics in the service provider's space that
resulted in this awakening. And though late,
href="www.bsnl.co.in"> BSNL
is finally coming of age.
The conferencing deal that marks a significant landmark on this road
was inked yesterday with
href="http://www.btconferencing.com/asiapacific/">BT.
The deal joins the two in providing best of breed web and audio
conferencing services. BSNL through the deal is looking to expand its
“managed enterprise solutions” business. Thats term
might be unheard of in BSNL a year back, but its part of their business
now!
The solution that the two will offer can support multiple dial-ins in a
single conference. The audio conference solution is integrated with
web-conferencing to support real-time and interactive discussions.
There can be 40 concurrent dial-ins from any country across the globe
in a single virtual conferencing supporting audio and web. Each of
these dial-ins locations can have multiple users in the conference.
Apart from BSNL, the deal also spells good news for the conferencing,
especially web conferencing services in India. Although the price
models and points for the offerings are yet to be known, the deal shall
help in taking conferencing a step further- to the desktop level. Also,
it is all set to add a zing to audio conferencing by enabling a visual
component for any desktop user.
According to CMD of BSNL,
href="http://www.bsnl.co.in/company/chairman_desk.htm">Kuldeep
Goyal, “The greatest
strength of these new services is found in the strong domestic reach
provided by BSNL coupled with the global coverage enabled by BT's
network. This deepening partnership enables our customers to
collaborate easily with their domestic and international users,
partners and vendors, wherever they are in the world. It also helps our
customers manage and reduce costs, improve productivity and helping to
create a greener environment.” He added, “A unique
selling point of this service is the ability for each participant to
dial in locally from their respective country.”
While BSNL's enormous domestic reach might be of service in spreading
the offerings across the country, BT's global experience might be of
tremendous use to BSNL from the technological perspective.
This deal too, is an extension of the MoU that the companies signed
some time back. As a part of this agreement BT and BSNL have been
working jointly on large customer opportunities in India whereby BSNL
utilises its country-wide telecom infrastructure and BT facilitates
with its best practices in all fields.
Lets see if the face of conferencing
changes with this deal, as much as the face of BSNL has!
