New Update

Nasscom, together with IT industry players, is introducing a certification
test for BPO aspirants to provide standardization in the industry. A
McKinsey-Nasscom study estimates that the ITeS-BPO industry in India would
require about 1.1 mn people by 2008. But the BPO industry has been struggling to
meet this manpower demand; statistically, only five out of the 100 interviewed
get qualified for a job. Indeed, a low conversion rate. Add to that the amount
of time and resources that go in to screening and interviewing candidates. Says
Sunil Mehta, VP of Nasscom: "The primary objective is to create an
employable talent pool with skills that are benchmarked."

This is the first initiative for a nationwide test supported by Nasscom in
the ITeS segment. Adds Kapil Magan, senior director for HR at vCustomer,
"We expect Nasscom's initiative to create qualified talent pool and
simplify the recruitment process." As BPOs would be required to just
interview candidates, recruitment costs could come down by 40-50%. The pilot of
the test is likely to begin soon and Nasscom is planning to make the test
mandatory in future. The program is also likely to create a huge business
opportunity for training organizations.
