Indian manufacturing can create 13 million jobs, says Accenture
"The working population of 600 million in the country needs labor
intensive manufacturing activities like electronic and computer assembly. This
job addition will offset the drop in employment in the unorganized sector,"
said Accenture’s partner Sudarshan Sampatkumar. According to a study by
Accenture a management consultancy firm, through world class working practices
and competitiveness, Indian Manufacturing sector can create 13 million new jobs
and attract Foreign Direct Investment worth US$ 75 billion by 2006. '

Speaking on ’Humor in Corporate Management’ at a meeting of the 8 O’clock
Club, an association of IT and technology professionals in Hyderabad, Narendra
Luther said: "Humor, jokes and jokers should not be treated lightly!"
Giving examples where humor had helped in soothing tense moments, Luther, a
former bureaucrat, said at a difficult meeting between the Russians and the
Americans on disarmament, the Russian side came up with an interesting
definition of Socialism and Capitalism. They said, "In capitalism man
exploits man, while in Socialism, it is the other way round."

CEOs to waive bonus, take salary cuts
The chief executives of Pearson Plc, Motorola Inc and Royal Philips
Electronics NV are among the latest in a spate of CEOs to forgo bonuses and take
salary cuts as their companies lose money. The Pearson Chief Executive Officer,
Marjorie Scardino, declined a Pound 157,500 ($225,000) bonus for 2001 after the
owner of the Financial Times posted a full-year loss of Pound 391 million from a
profit of Pound 179 million a year ago. Philips reported its first annual loss
since 1996, while Motorola had its first annual decline before restructuring
costs in 71 years. "Underperformance should equate with reduced or
non-existent bonuses for management because performance and pay are
linked," said Peter Bracken, head of communications at Whitehead Mann Group
Plc., head-hunting firm. Other companies that cut CEO and! top management pay
and bonuses are McGraw-Hill, Marriott International, Boeing, Daimler-Chrysler,
JP Morgan Chase and Royal Bank of Scotland.
Microsoft India to double staff
Microsoft India would double the number of workers at its Hyderabad based
software development center in one year, Managing Director Rajiv Kaul said.
"Our objective is to double the size of the manpower to 300 over the next
12 months," he said, the company would invest $50 - 75 million over the
next 12-18 months in hiring new professionals and expanding infrastructure at
the center.
Andersen to cut 6,000 jobs
Andersen is planning to declare within a week that at least 6,000 jobs, over
20% of its workforce, will be axed in the US. The US practice, which employs
28,000 of Andersen’s 85,000 worldwide staff, is reeling from criticism and has
lost business over its role in the Enron scandal. Paul Volcker (former Chairman
of the Federal Reserve) has recommended that Andersen should remodel itself as a
pure audit firm.
