One thing that has been on the minds of Indians from the past few days is the Mission Shakti and the ASAT Missile. While the country is raving about DRDO’s achievement, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) do not seem happy about the mission. NASA, in a live streamed Town Hall Meeting described the ‘debris’ created by ASAT Missile as a ‘terrible thing’.
NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine said that there were a total of 400 pieces of debris that the ASAT missile created of the 60 pieces of debris that were large enough to track, 24 pieces went above the highest point of the International Space Station (ISS), which apparently puts their ‘people at risk’.
"That is a terrible, terrible thing to create an event that sends debris at an apogee that goes above the International Space Station. That kind of activity is not compatible with the future of human spaceflight” said Bridenstine in the meeting.
Anand Mahindra, Chairman Mahindra Group, however, has not taken NASA’s statement kindly and called it ‘audacious’ while defending Mission Shakti. “A case of the pot calling the kettle black. From a nation that created most of the debris in space over decades, this is an audacious statement,” tweeted Anand Mahindra, who is quite opinionated about all the current happenings and active on Twitter.
The ASAT Missile was successfully tested on 27th March 2019 and PM Narendra Modi made the announcement that Indian DRDO researchers and scientists shot down a pre-determined live satellite in the Lower Earth Orbit (LEO) via the anti-satellite in the Mission Shakti. The mission was successfully conducted in matter of just three minutes. The satellite that was most likely shot down was Microsat-R or Microsat-TD launched by ISRO, suggested reports.
“Mission Shakti is special for 2 reasons: (1) India is only the 4th country to acquire such a specialised & modern capability. (2) Entire effort is indigenous. India stands tall as a space power! It will make India stronger, even more secure and will further peace and harmony,” tweeted Narendra Modi at that time.
Along with the successful testing of the mission, India registered its name amongst countries with Space Power, which only America, Russia and China had for a long time.
