Aegis, Wipro, and Accenture win NCPEDP-Shell Hellen Keller Awards

Of the many organizations, NGOs and insititutions winning NCPEDP-Shell Hellen Keller acknowlegdements for 2012 for their effort in promoting equal opportunities for people with disabilities, many ICT companies also proved their commitment in the cause.

Aegis, Wipro, and Accenture Services were few which were awarded recently the NCPEDP-Shell Hellen Keller Awards for 2012.

Aegis curently employees 969 disabilities, which constitute 1.69% of its total global workforce. Aegis employs 376 persons with disabilities, which is 1.37% of the workforce in the country. Aegis has implimented a policy covering all areas of employement, including but not limited to recruitment, hiring, training, retention and promotion of individuals with disabilities. The organisation has been associated with 27 NGOs globally that provide people with disabilities training and organisational exposure for enhancing their employability.They have also designed and implimented specific rewards and regignition programmes for persons with disabilities for recognising their work commitments.

Wipro focussd on two major areas for the year 2011-12 in this regard- 1) the inclusion of people with disabilities through accessible information systems. In this intiative, Wipro has been working towards making its internal enterprise services accesible.

Second initiative is the inclusion of people with hearing impairements. The global service managemnt center at mysore hired six students with hearing impairments. They were assisted by sign language interpreter. Wipro's chennai offfice also launched an internship programme where 27 students with hearing impairemnts were given a one month project at the BPO center.

Accenture Services in partnership with Leonard Cheshire Disability (LCD) has developed a technology platform( www.jobability.org) that will serve as an industry interface between persons with disabilities and prospective employers. The company engages iun annual survey to understand the needs of employees with disabilities. Accenture has also collaborated with ngos to engage their employees to build projects where persons with disabilities are being trained for potential employement sectors such as retail, hospitality, bpo and microenterprise training.

Mphasis BPO's Employee wins Role Model Supporters award

Apart from The IT companies; Mphasis BPO's Assitant Operations Manager for enterprise vertical,Pune; Jaishree Thandwal also received the Role Model Supporters award under category B.

Jaishree has played a vital role in hiring deaf persons into her team of BPO USSA Transaction processing Officers. She has piloted the service delivery of one of her accounts with 2 deaf resources. Jaishree has now hired three more deaf persons ans is exploring the possibility of scaling it up in the future.

The award were given to individuals from within the disability sector or outside, who have contributed substantially to the cause of promoting employemnt opportunites for disabled people over an extended period of time were awarded.

The NCPEDP-Shell Hellen Keller Awards have come to be recognised as the most prestigous Indian Benchmark for honouring people and organisations that have worked towards a barrier free, non discriminatory and inclusivbe India.
