Aadhaar and PAN card linking deadline has been extended once again by the Government of India. Citizens can now do the needful before 30 June 2023. “In order to provide some more time to the taxpayers, the date for linking PAN and Aadhaar has been extended to 30 June, 2023, whereby persons can intimate their Aadhaar to the prescribed authority for PAN-Aadhaar linking without facing repercussions,” said Income Tax India.

The organisation has, however, clarified that unlinked PAN Cards will become inoperative from 1 July 2023 onwards along with the consequences that come along with it. “The PAN can be made operative again in 30 days, upon intimation of Aadhaar to the prescribed authority after payment of fee of Rs 1,000,” added Income Tax India. 

Repercussions of Missing  Aadhaar and PAN Card Linking Deadline

Citizens who fail to link their Aadhaar and PAN card before 30 June 2023 will have to bear with the following consequences:

  • PAN will become inoperative from 1 July 2023 onwards.
  • No refund will be made against inoperable PANs.
  • No interest will be payable on the refund for the period the PAN remains inoperative.
  • TDS and TCS will be deducted or collected at a higher rate, as provided in the Income-Tax Act, 1961.

“This category includes those residing in specified States, a non-resident as per the Act, an individual who is not a citizen of India or individuals of the age of eighty years or more at any time during the previous year,” says the official notice from the Government of India.The Indian Government has also clarified that over 51 crore PANs have already been linked with Aadhaar till date.

How to Link Aadhaar and PAN Card

Citizens will have to do the following to link their Aadhaar and PAN Cards:

  • Visit the Income Tax e-filing portal.
  • After registering on the portal, the user’s PAN will be their User ID.
  • Users can then log in by entering the User ID, password and date of birth.
  • A pop-up window will then appear, prompting to link PAN with Aadhaar. If not, users can go to ‘Profile Settings’ on the Menu bar and click on ‘Link Aadhaar’.
  • All the details mentioned on the PAN will appear on the screen. Details on the PAN will have to match with details of other, failing which users will have to get the same corrected in either of their documents.
  • If the details match, Aadhaar number will have to be entered and users will then have to click on the “link now” button.
  • After that, a pop-up message saying Aadhaar has been successfully linked to PAN will be displayed.
