Even in those times that IT professionals used    to

make their money and run, the average tenure of a Compaq techie was four

years, second only to the six-year average enjoyed by TCS. However, apart

from software professionals, this includes professionals involved in

hardware and systems maintenance, typically slower at job-hopping than

software development professionals.

Compaq employees are a satisfied lot, with the company topping the

overall satisfaction rating. Not only are employees satisfied themselves,

but are also convinced about the high satisfaction levels of their

colleagues (Compaq tops on perception of peer satisfaction as well).

This is significant as in the case of other companies, the results have

shown that though employees believe that their colleagues are happy, they

themselves are unhappy and vice versa. The fact that employees have

expressed contentment with the quality of professionals within the company

also indicates good interpersonal relationships within the organization.

Compaq ranks high on the performance appraisal system as well.

Another driver of employee performance is the fact that a third of

Compaq employees are eligible for a half-yearly salary appraisal. Compaq’s

appraisal policy is comparable to Philips (71% of employees) and Zensar

Technologies (43.7%) of employees are eligible for half-yearly salary

reviews. This is significant, considering that others like IBM, I-flex and

Pentamedia do not conduct half-yearly salary appraisals.

What Compaq gains in a good retention rate, compensation and company

image, it loses in ESOP eligibility criteria and opportunities for

overseas assignments.
