In growth terms, it was an average year for this Delhi-based computer peripherals manufacturer. According to DQ estimates, Microtek’s revenues for 2000-01 grew by 30%, with the company closing its books at Rs 476
crore. During the fiscal, Microtek tied up with Conexant for developing and manufacturing external and internal modems. it also launched its range of ‘smart’ modems based on Conexant technology, using the Rockwell chipset. These products are since being promoted in the entire SAARC region.
The fiscal also saw Microtek initiate a number of quality management processes. It embarked on a Rs 25-crore restructuring and expansion drive to increase
marketshare, with encouraging results. It sold monitors worth Rs 160 crore to emerge as the third-best vendor, trailing only Samsung and LG. It also sold speakers worth Rs 40.5
crore, modems worth 37.5 crore and motherboards worth Rs 15.5 crore. However, after monitors, cabinet sales accounted for the biggest chunk–Rs 58.5
crore. It also plans to get into LAN cards, set-top boxes, routers, switches and hubs.
