In 2012, we have seen un-preceding growth in technologies being adopted in data center. However it's imperative to highlight some basics dos and don'ts which would ensure datacenter simplicity and reduce risk from outages and cyber threats.

With adoption near scale in computing the complexity within data center infrastructure has also raised manifolds. Therefore we need to adapt changes which we can manage and scale accordingly.

WHAT THE DATACENTER NEEDS

1. Simplify the protocol for client to server network and infrastructure so that to ensure that all the users can access the data with ease and remain within a single standard network.

2. Adopt a strong system management tool which can help not only manage the systems health check but also integrates with heterogeneous infrastructure tools to provide upgrades/updates of both hardware and software.

3. Consolidation with right approach to simplifications and management. Try design and adopt a converged infrastructure protocol which can help consolidate all levels of infrastructure starting from hardware to compute on virtualization and OS integration plus applications.

4. Don't put all eggs in the same basket. Though there are multiple solutions is being offered by each vendor, it is always good to evaluate what is best fit for your business need and its adoption in future. The key is to adopt IT for business enablement and growth.

5. Though cloud infrastructure is taking shape to provide IT services in most organizations, one should architect the need based to align both internal and external ecosystem within the same cloud.

WHAT YOU SHOULD BE CAREFULL OF

1. Non compliance of industry standard based infrastructure can lead to integration issues among heterogeneous technologies within a datacenter.

2. Virtualization, though being adopted in most datacenters, one should not built the overall virtualized infrastructure on capacity utilization solely. Certain applications such as OLTP, OLAP, ERP etc requires high performance bandwidth from both compute and memory standpoint and thus needs to be accessed properly before adopting a virtualized infrastructure.

3. With the ever growing trend in public cloud services adoption in datacenters, the risk on network security has also risen immensely. Don't share crucial data on the cloud without accessing the security protocols thoroughly both in internal and external network environments.

4. A major challenge that has emerged in front of CIOs is to manage the ever increasing growth of unstructured data within the organization. Therefore non adoption of a controlled data management system may lead to high cost of investment accordingly.
