Cities are however, strained! Increasingly, residents are too! 55% of the world’s population lives in urban areas. That’s expected to increase to 68% by 2050 – an increase of 2.5 billion people. By 2030, the world is projected to have 43 megacities, with more than 10 million inhabitants each. Demand for water is forecast to drastically outstrip supply in multiple cities in India, China, Africa, and the Americas by 2030. Cities of the future will soon account for 90% of world's population growth, 80% of carbon emissions, and 75% of energy consumption.

The total number of natural disasters between 2010 and 2022 increased by 102% compared to the previous two decades (1980-2009). Weather-related power outages also increased by nearly 80% from 2011 to 2021.

Honeywell smart city global deployments covers 75+ cities, 10,000+ intersections, 250,000 IoT sensors, and over 100 million+ citizens and visitors. Smart cities rely on Honeywell as we can integrate departmental silos to transform municipal operations. These include city command and control app, video systems, traffic management, parking and transport management, street lighting / utility metering, waste management, e-governance, citizen engagement, environment monitoring, and emergency services.

Honeywell is building the Atlanta Beltline and the city of the future in the USA. It is a 22-mile, and 6-month pilot installation with future scaling. We have done Master system integrator feasibility study, focused on equity and inclusion, deliver open access and affordability, and bring economic expansion and opportunity. The Honeywell City Suite includes IoT-enablement platform to underpin 22 smart-and-connected projects spanning 2023-2030.

Pilot scope has people counting, digital signage, and enhanced waste management. Centralized smart city service center can promote 100+ community events, and oversee public safety. It should be financially sustainable by 2030. We will continuously bring Atlanta BeltLine grearter access to new technology.

Honeywell has curated digital trail experiences across 22 miles. It reduce injuries and crashes at Vision 0 intersections. It will continuously bring BeltLine greater access to new technology. The goal is for it to become financially sustainable by 2030. Smart corridor and digital inclusion initiative utilizes Atlanta BeltLine infrastructure to spur innovative programs that generate revenue, help with maintenance and sustainability of the project, and work to address digital inclusion for residents and business. It helps generate revenue for the BeltLine to support the future programs. It also develops a comprehensive strategy and pilot program, and works to address digital inclusion, access and the digital divide.

The project goals are open access and affordability, with reduced prices, greater access, and safer and healthier environments. We have installed fiber-installed technologies, a key for any thriving community. Other project goals are equity and inclusion, and economic development.

Last year, Honeywell and Accelerator for America announced the launch of the Honeywell Smart City Accelerator Program to help cities strategically plan their futures and build capacity to fund transformational initiatives. Honeywell is engaging with five US cities to provide in-kind support to accelerate progress on their smart city strategic planning. The cities are Cleveland, Louisville, Kansas City, San Diego, and Waterloo.
