Tata Infotech had a bad run in fiscal 2001-02. Revenues dropped 7.6%
to close the year with figures of Rs 483.8 crore, and net profits also slipped
by 22.7%–the fall primarily came in from sagging software exports (down Rs 48
crore), while domestic software sales remained flat. It was hardware exports
that was the find of the day–growing to nearly Rs 37 crore. Tata Infotech won
MAIT’s ‘Award for Excellence in Hardware Exports’ this year.

The company has been weak in the software exports sphere for the past few
years–this time around, in the year of the slowdown, it could not pull off
even marginal growth. It systems integration and customized software development
in the domestic space. It began managed services in association with iServ
India, and bagged a Rs 9-crore order for systems maintenance and facilities
management from Air-India. Amongst export orders was an integrated tax solution
built around its own product, TaxMantra–an order worth $1.5 million from the
City of Tempe, Arizona.
