A key player in the CAD/CAM/GIS, Rolta

grossed revenues of Rs 257 crore during fiscal 1999-00, a growth of 59%. This

rate was almost double the last fiscal’s 30%.

The biggest news for Rolta in the last

fiscal was its foray into the ISP business after encountering initial legal

hurdles. Its service, christened RoltaNet, was launched in Mumbai, with plans to

take it to other cities. Its investments in this area were to the tune of Rs 50

crore, while the subscriber base stood at 10,000.

Rolta

also applied for a license to set up an international gateway. At present, it

seems all set for an international gateway because as an ISP it would utilize up

to 80% of the bandwidth capacity of the gateway.

The company launched a generalized

portal that linked to other sites. It now plans to create a vertical

portal having specialization in IT, education and engineering. Rolta also tied

up with banks for letting them use its platform for internet banking and with

brokerage houses to allow them use its infrastructure for trading activities.

Earnings

from domestic activities constituted 70% of the overall revenue, an indication

of its growing strength in the domestic market. In the last fiscal, exports

stood at Rs 102 crore as compared to Rs 59 crore in the fiscal 1998-99–a

growth of 57%. All of its exports were to Japan. It plans to add to its existing

suite of CAD/CAM and GIS products.

Rolta is investing in infrastructure for providing a

solid base for escalating growth. Apart from aiming to reach the top slot among

the internet and ecommerce service providers, it is planning to consolidate its

position in the CAD/CAM/GIS market in India as well as in geo-engineering and

conversion.
