Govt requests for Google user data rising, India at #2

Governments across the world are tracking specific internet users through requests to top websites like Google. According to Google's semi-annual 'transparency report', India was the second country in the world with 2,431 requests for data about 4,106 users from Google. Of course, the US topped the list with 8,438 requests for information about 14,868 users.

Governments across the world are steadily tracking users through online resources. In the report, India was followed by France, where Google received 1,693 requests for information about 2,063 users.

According to Richard Salgado, head of Google's law enforcement and information security division, these requests were part of the law enforcement activities and to track the criminals.

The company also revealed that user data requests of all kinds have gone up by 70% since 2009. There were total 21,389 requests about 33,634 users from July through December 2012.

In response, the company claimed to offer data in almost 68% cases which is down from 76% in late 2010.
