HITLAB (Healthcare Innovation Lab, USA) which one of the leading innovation and teaching lab dedicated to improving the quality and accessibility of healthcare worldwide along with Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi organized HITLAB Innovators Summit India 2015 at the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi on 7th August 2015 which was attended by more than 100 experts in healthcare and technology domain. Event was sponsored by Medtronic, which is World's premier medical technology & services company and HealthStart which is India's first accelerator program dedicated to support start ups in healthcare industry.

Prof. Stan Kachnowski, chair HITLAB, USA shared key ideology of HITLAB is to help organizations to ideate, create, and evaluate technology-based solutions to pressing healthcare challenges.

Guest of honor Dr. Sanjiv Kumar, Executive Director of the National Health Resource Center and WHO Collaborating Center India laid emphasis on technological Innovations to uplift heathcare standards in India. Growing base of mobiles phones and apps is going to be an important tool for healthcare innovations in India.

Keynote speaker Dr. Shailja Dixit, Executive Director, Global Health Economics and Outcomes Research, Actavis provided brief on India’s potential for improving healthcare scenario globally along within subcontinent shared her views in bridging various healthcare divides based on socio-economic, rural-urban, doctor-patient & gender based parameters.

Supten Sarbadhikari, Project Director, Centre for Health Informatics, National Health Portal, India shared key initiatives like interactive features for general forum, professional forum and EHR health desk at national health portal along with umbrella activities under NHP.

Mrs. Sonia Gandhi, Project Manager BIRAC (Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council) highlighted the various funding schemes for startups as well as SMEs. Through seed funding more than 100 entrepreneurs had already been supported along with reaching out to more than 250 companies by BIRAC

M.P. Gupta, Professor at IIT, Delhi; Kaustubh Patil, Medtronic India Development Centre (Bangalore); Guruprasad S., General Manager, Healthcare Practice, Robert Bosch Engineering Solutions, India; Anurag Asthana, Site Director- Medtronic India (R&D Centre Hyderabad) ; Rahul Mullick, Chief Technology Officer, India Programs, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation were other key luminaries in the event.

They exchanged ideas on:

1)  Technology trends and their ability to revolutionize Indian healthcare

2)  Not-for-profit models in healthcare and their impact on Indian society

3)  Investment strategies for innovation adoption in healthcare

With growing adoption of new devices in hospitals along with the immediate requirement of better healthcare products and services India is witnessing trends such as Growth of intelligent devices, collaboration of multiple players across entire value chain & Movement from product orientation towards service orientation.

Talking about growing impact of technology in Indian Healthcare, Laura Pugliese, Manager, Innovations at HITLAB shared “Digital health, mHealth, and medtech are moving at a tremendous pace in India, demonstrating the potential to revolutionize health delivery and outcomes in the country. There’s an enormous amount of investment capital in play, and health startups in India are growing at an unprecedented rate. It is estimated that within 10 years India will become one of the largest exporters of medical and digital innovation in the world. As exciting, India has the potential to make significant global contributions via reverse innovation; that is, bringing technologies that are developed for resource-constrained or remote healthcare settings in India to the rest of the world.”

In India, HITLAB is developing a healthcare ecosystem including physicians, non-profit organizations, government agencies, startups, research academicians, and individual innovators that is producing tremendous innovations in digital health, mHealth, medical device creation, and healthcare delivery in general. This ecosystem can be leveraged by anyone in India who wants to improve healthcare.

HITLAB is working with companies and startups to devise affordable innovations that can be deployed in Indian and other nearby developing markets. Last but not least, HITLAB have been supporting the upcoming generation of innovators by organizing the HITLAB Innovators Summit India and HITLAB World Cup India annually, wherein innovators exchange ideas and showcase their products to industry leaders and government bodies. HITLAB has been instrumental in facilitating partnerships between startups, corporations, and public agencies in order to scale up innovation.

Conference concluded HITLAB World Cup India provides innovators with a stage to showcase their digital health innovations. In this three winners were awarded for their innovative concept which improves healthcare. Winners also received seed funding of 20,00,000 INR and mentorship from HealthStart India

Mr. Kapoor noted, “Finalists in this challenge represent the best in healthcare innovation, offering new approaches that are not only visionary but practical. Our World Cup produced inspiring ideas with real-world applications. In addition to winners of the HITLAB World Cup India 2015, all startups working across India to improve healthcare access and delivery can leverage our network.”
