Power criticality is becoming extremely important

Pune-based DB Power Electronics has been in the business of designing, manufacturing and servicing of UPS for the last 34 yearsboth locally as well across 18 different countries. Like most manufacturing outfits today, DB Power too has become environment conscious. In an exclusive interview with Dataquest, Pradeep Pimpley, vice president, DB Power, reveals these environment friendly initiatives as well as sectors they are targeting for their solutions

Being environment conscious or green-friendly has become the norm for most manufacturing concerns. How is DB Power committed to providing Green Power, and what are your environment friendly initiatives?
This is a most relevant question in todays scenario. The power criticality is important for various sectors. For this an optimum usage of available power is to be achieved. If the power converters (here UPS) do not pollute the supply power by injecting harmonics into it, the supply power will remain clean, and it will be Green Power. Also, the losses due to harmonics will be reduced and the available power will be used to optimum.

With reduction of injected harmonics, achieving Unity Power factor, and increasing the overall conversion efficiency, the UPS systems contributes heavily to achieve Green Power. With Unity Power factor and low harmonics the DG works at better efficiency and consumes lesser fuel. This reduction in consumption will also help in achieving Environment friendly setups.

DB Power offers UPSes with near Unity Power factor at front end, and very low harmonic distortion with their Harmony series UPS. The company has recently launched Digital Active Power Conditioner (DAPC), which helps all types of power conversion equipments (UPS, DC Converters and chargers) to achieve low THDi figures (Total Current Harmonic Distortion figures). With the reduction of harmonic currents in the circuit, heating losses in cables, transformers and switchgears are drastically reduced. This reduces the load on air conditioning (saving power), and achieves better utilization of transformers and generators. The overall damaging effects are nullified by this state-of-the-art system. It guarantees harmonic distortion as per IEEE 519 international standard.

What are the sectors where you are deploying most of your solutions?
Currently we are focusing on the IT-ITeS, engineering, and telecom sectorsmost importantly into their data centers. We provide data center solutions to Microsoft and Reliance Communications. Other major clients include IBM, Dell, VSNL, C-DOT and Bharti Airtel. However, among telcos, Vodafone is our biggest customer.

What are your expansion plans in the future?
As of now we do not have any. We are planning to expand our plant at Satara, and our research and development center in Pune. Currently, we have six regional offices in Pune, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Delhi and Kolkata. In all we have 55 offices across the country, which include our marketing and service support teams.
