2 | Wipro: Measuring the IP
Wipro has gone beyond talking innovationto applying, measuring, and benefiting from it
Saturday, July 21, 2007

While the Indian IT industry discussed how to innovate, Wipro went ahead and articulated what it wanted from innovation in numbers: 10% of revenue in a three-year period starting fiscal 06. Last year, with 1,000 people working on innovation, its combined (across service lines) "innovation revenue" was already at over 5%.

The other strategy for finding new avenues for growth was Wipros now famous "string of pearls" acquisition, which continued in FY 07. It acquired mechanical design firm Quantech; retail solutions firm Enabler; and wireless design firm Sarawareall three aimed at skill acquisition. Wipro Infotechits India, Apac and ME businessaccounted for 18% of revenue, growing at a much faster rate of 46% to reach Rs 2,484 crore. It acquired 3D Networks, a network integrator focused on Asia and the Middle-East. The services business contributed 37% to the overall revenue of Wipro Infotech.

As with many offshore firms, Wipro Technologiess dependence on AMD came down. Its early focus on infrastructure services is paying off and Wipro is clearly the leader among large offshore firms in this area. FY 07 also saw Wipro BPOs transformation stabilizing. Wipro has the highest BPO contribution among tier-1 offshore services providers. Package implementation, as with all others, was a high growth area.
